Highest Grossing Filipino Films for 2015

2015 started out strong in terms of awareness among Filipino audiences that we do, in fact, have good movies. People that frequent festivals like the Cinemalaya and Cinema One Originals know this already. But for the masses that think it makes them cool to say that they do not watch Filipino movies and equate the state of Philippine Cinema to whatever slapstick comedy rules the Metro Manila Film Festival, I think their perception is beginning to change.

This year's first official blockbuster (a.k.a. any movie that breaches the 100M mark) is That Thing Called Tadhana. Originally shown in the Cinema One Originals Festival in 2014, Tadhana features Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman in memorable roles penned by Antoinette Jadaone (is this pronounced like Padawan?)

Before its commercial release, That Thing Called Tadhana won the Audience Choice Award at the Cinema One Originals Festival, a Best Actress Award for Panganiban via Cinema One and Gawad Tanglaw, and a Palanca for its screenplay. The film is distributed for commercial release by Star Cinema.

The 47th Box-Office Entertainment Awards tagged A Second Chance of Star Cinema as the top grossing film of 2015 with P556,000,000. They also settled the MMFF controversy with the official figures for The Beauty and The Bestie (P526 Million) and My Bebe Love (P385 Million) which ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.
