On Jesse Robredo

Up until three days ago, some people have not even heard of Jesse Robredo. He was just this public official that went missing after the private plane that he boarded crashed in Masbate, taking his life along with two others.

He was in a rush to go home that Saturday afternoon. His youngest daughter, Jillian, had just won an international math stint in Singapore and he missed the awarding rites because he had a job to do. He wanted to give her a treat to maybe make-up for his absence. And so he skipped his scheduled flight with Cebu Pacific and asked a friend to pilot him home instead.

I read somewhere that Robredo is known globally for exemplary service and has been recognized for his dedication to his job. At the end of the day, I think it is best to remember him as a father that was too eager to go home to his family. As good leaders may be molded in his image, his dedication and love for his wife and kids is a rarity. Having grown up with an absentee father, I often demonize people with a patriarchal image. Men like Robredo give me solace and hope that while most fathers can so easily fuck up, there are men that actually care enough to just be there for their families no matter how busy they are. For me, that is his biggest and most significant achievement.

Rest in peace, Jesse Robredo.

His death is a great loss to his family and this country. He accomplished so much already and everything that he did, he did in service to his native city, Naga and this country. We were deprived of seing what more he could have accomplished for this country. My condolences to his family and the families of the two pilots. Rest in Peace.

Very sad. He had the makings of a really good future president.

  3. Jesse Robredo is a good man. He is not corrupt like most of our leaders in philippines. He set a good model to young people on how to be a good public servant. He show a deepest dedication to his country by serving the people honestly.
