After its world premiere at the Montreal International Film Festival and its hit participation at the Vancouver and Cairo International Film Festivals, King Palisoc’s TANDEM will finally have a commercial wide release in the Philippines starting February 17.
Tandem is a crime noir telling the story of two brothers who take advantage of the chaos of the city roads to perpetrate their antisocial occupation: riding in tandem as robbers on a motorbike. When a carefully planned robbery outing turns bloody violent, the brothers are forced to shift gears as hitmen of a high profile officer.
The director, King Palisoc took his filmmaking upstart dishing out music videos, TV commercials and TV shows. A BA Communications Ateneo de Manila University alumnus, King started venturing into narrative filmmaking by directing and producing the acclaimed short documentary “Paalam Pilipinas” (Farewell Philippines). His short feature-length film entitled “Makina” (Machine) is the second installment of the crime drama anthology film “Bang Bang Alley”, and was released under Curve Entertainment in 2014. Tandem is his first full length feature film.
The producers of Buchi Boy Films and Tuko Films are also the creation of Artikulo Uno Productions, the maker of the popular historical movie, Heneral Luna. The company has defied commonly held formulae in the Philippine entertainment industry and embarked on this feat to achieve success. Today, they continue working on original Filipino content helping filmmakers who have participated in local film festivals such as the QCinema and the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. Quantum Films has a long filmography of quality independent films with over a decade of experience. Some of its more popular titles include Kubrador, Here Comes the Bride, Ang Babae sa Septic Tank and last year’s MMFF sleeper hit, English Only, Please. Its films have toured the world over competing in some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals in Toronto, Venice, Moscow, Berlin, Busan, among others and have won various local awards.
The film, which is quite reminiscent of another crime drama, On The Job (Matti, 2013), is based on a concept originally written by Mikhail Red. It features JM De Guzman, who won for his performance when it was shown as part of the New Wave Category of the Metro Manila Film Festival; and underrated indie regular Nico Antonio as brothers. This also marks Rochelle Pangilinan’s first major role in an independent film. The film also features a grownup “Tolits” of Eat Bulaga fame, BJ Forbes. Also in the cast are Allan Paule, Paolo O’Hara, Simon Ibarra, BJ Forbes, Karl Medina, Dennis Marasigan, and the magnetic Elora Espano whose performance here is superlative.
Tandem is scheduled to have its European premiere at the Fantasporto International Film Festival in Oporto, Portugal, one of Europe’s premiere fantastic film festivals.
