Damas de Noche is a musical about four women trapped in the conventions set by society and their struggle to overcome that oppression. It is a tale that reflects our struggle as a nation, raped and abused by one country then passed on to another to be used for their own interests and gain.
Set in the Spanish-American War era, Damas de Noche tells the story of Leonarda, a helper accused as a mujerzuela, who wishes to be with her rebellious lover once again; Juanita, a young mother who wishes to be a star of the zarzuelas; Maria, a worker at a tobacco factory who goes to the city in hopes of getting riches; and Clara, a woman silenced by a sickness she acquired after getting raped by 14 men. Their stories are narrated by Magdalena, the famous character, here performing the role of "whore for all seasons".
Joi Barrios' Damas de Noche was first staged in 2001 in a production called "Alimuom". In 2006, it was restaged by the company and made into a musical with a libretto written by Romulo Baquiran Jr. It will again be presented by the UP Repertory Company on March 1 and 8 (3pm and 7pm); March 7 and 10 (7pm) at the Aldaba Recital Hall, UP Diliman.
