Review: Pagpag Syam na Buhay

Pagpag: Syam na Buhay puts together the formula used by popular slasher flicks like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, changes the killer to a supernatural being and adds a bit of traditional Filipino horror  to complete the mix. Of course there's the jock (or at least the rich, good-looking guy that turns out to be the hero), the virgin, the dispensable friends and a pretty effective token funny guy. The result is a non-scary albeit funny film that was entertaining yet pretty disposable.

Popular teen stars Daniel Padilla and Katryn Bernardo give out decent enough performances though I suspect that the characters that they play could not have been much different than what they usually play on television. That said, they have enough screen presence not to be eclipsed by able performances by Shaina Magdayao, Matet and the hilarious Janus del Prado.

As with his previous film, The Reunion, Frasco Mortiz is able to give out a youthful and fun vibe to Pagpag. It also shares the same limitations, that of vision. His films sharing that feel of coming up with something which is okay na and no longer aspiring to do better.

(Promo plugs for messaging app Kakaotalk were prominently placed throughout the film. Makes one question though if network signal is that good in liblib places in the movie that people would bother using a wifi/3g/lte based app rather than just text or call.)

Rating: 2.5/5
