Review: This Guy's In Love with You Mare

Update: I am currently chaperoning my Mom here in Baguio and she wanted to watch this so I obliged. Here's my take on the film.

Dale's Review:

This Guy's in love with you Mare tackles the typical gay relationship that most straight people can relate to. The supposed straight guy (I say supposed because my stand on the matter is, if you have sex with another guy, there is no way in hell should you be able to call yourself straight) hooks up with a gay guy for money, leaves him for a girl and tries to forget about that part of his life. Some critic calls this film progressive. I say this is as progressive as my mom saying that I will be somebody's sugar daddy when I told her I'm gay. It is reflective of the backward way that society views gay relationships just like when people ask, "E sino sa inyo ang lalaki?"

Of course, this is not to say that these things don't actually happen. I just feel like given the ignorance of the masses in this particular issue, they could have at least provided a glimpse of how some gay people are in a self-respecting, mutually beneficial relationship just like any hetero couple.

This particular issue aside, Wenn Deramas' way of storytelling where he spells everything out for his audience worked for this film. It never hurt that Vice Ganda pointed out the obvious to Toni Gonzaga towards the end after she got mad at Luis for hooking up with a gay guy as if he committed a heinous crime.

The film was also sporadically funny, although a lot of people who were lol-ing in the cinema would surely disagree with me. In the end, I would say that this is better than the other Vice-Luis-Wenn offering, Petrang Kabayo, but it wouldn't even rank close to Wenn's personal best, Tanging Ina.

I couldn't bring myself to watch this so here's Jae's review of This Guy's in love with you Mare. The movie boasts of being produced by the same team as the highest grossing Filipino film of all time, Praybeyt Benjamin. I haven't seen that one either so I am not here to judge. I just feel like having seen all of the Tanging Ina movies plus the disastrous first 30 minutes of the Petrang Kabayo remake is enough to swear off Wenn Deramas for a lifetime. Regardless of what's said here though, this movie is sure to be a hit anyway. But so are the Enteng Kabisote movies and these are all the same formula flicks that are designed to give your brain cells a break (or a coma) when you watch them. - Dale

Jae's Review:

I didn't expect much from this movie since all Wenn Deramas' comedy flicks have the same formula - witty one-liners, slapstick (as in "ugly-people-are-funny-just-because-they-are-ugly") comedy and non-drama drama. I wasn't disappointed. It still has the same elements with a different cast and a pseudo-story.

The story would have been nice except for the fact that it sort of got forgotten by the 2nd part and everyone got lazy. I guess they all thought, "Hell, this is Vice Ganda with Wenn Deramas plus Luis Manzano and Toni Gonzaga. This will be a box-office hit no matter what!" On that point, I agree with them - this movie will sell even if they tried their best to ruin it with bad acting, bad script and a plot that goes nowhere. And it looks like they tried really hard.

The cast's acting are mediocre at best. I have utmost respect for Vice. Watching him in Showtime, one can tell that this comedian is an intellectual, at par (or even better) with some of our senators (sorry, I can't resist). He is also pretty effective with his jokes and one-liners, except for drama. His drama scenes look like he is constipated and is cringe-inducing. Luis Manzano has the same peg - good comedy, bad drama. Only Toni was able to pull it off, although not her best (she was phenomenal in My Amnesia Girl), she was comedic when needed, and hurting when the scene called for it.

My main gripe for this movie is how much the story trivializes and makes fun of the gay character/s. Yes, obviously, this is comedy so I am expecting that the laughs will come mostly at the gay guys' expense, but to belittle how he loves/feels about someone is insulting. You tell your viewers that this gay person is in love with the guy for 3 years, doing almost everything to get him back and yet, forgets about him after being rescued by a hot guy in the end? The gay community deserves more than that.

Should you watch it? If you're just in it for the laughs, yes. I actually LOL'ed 30% of the time. If you want comedy that has a semblance of intellect, you're better off getting Ang Babae sa Septic Tank on DVD.

  2. With your logic, people aren't allowed to voice out their opinion and expect quality unless they are privy to the craft. In a broader sense, it follows that people can't complain about a government official's folly coz you would be told, "bat d nalang ikaw ang tumakbo?" Just wow.

  3. you're actually right. The film only grosses because it's Star Cinema produced. This is one of the worst films i've seen this year. Hardly laugh at the film (except for the The Mistress spoof). Everything was sped up, and Vice, did not look man at all. Though he tried hard.

The best part of the movie was already shown in the trailer. Other than that, nothing else was overly funny

Isa lng ang masasabi ko, ang producer gusto lng kumita ang pelikula-kabisado na nila ang publiko, just like kung paanong kabisado ng mga partido kung paano mananalo ang manok nila sa eleksyon.

Didn't watch this movie kahit libre pa sya for the ff reasons:
    1. Predictable story, the trailer tells it all.
    2. So late 80's... very relevant to Roderick's movie. I find his movies funny, specially at that time.. uso kasi pero 2012 na.
    3. Personally, i don't like the cast. I've watched their movies and it's the same, old baduy story. There's nothing wrong with being jologs naman minsan but it's not worth the money, time and effort watching this lame movie.

I don't find any good things about this movie.

As a kid living there in the 80s, the only gay Filipino actor I recalled was Roderick Paulate. How times has changed! The chick in this film looks great. If there's one thing that I'm proud of about the Philippines, it would have to be the Filipina Beauty. Classy & elegance coated with self-respect & dignity. Unlike most American women I dated throughout the years, they may look great on the outside but rotten & vile on the inside. Mad love & aloha to all the Filipinos!
