The last time that local cinema produced a musical was in 2010 with the movie, Emir. It was a grand and ambitious production that went bust in the local box-office. I would like to think that the Filipino audience has matured since then. If it is any indication, theater productions of musicals have been getting a huge following and have been having sold-out shows and reruns since last year.
This August 29th, Unitel pictures takes a stab at another musical, this time targeting a younger audience and featuring the timeless songs of the Apo Hiking Society. It features Sam Concepcion and Tippy dos Santos who are theater actors themselves. They starred together in a mostly sold-out run of Peter Pan, co-produced by Repertory Philippines and Stages. It also features a powerhouse cast led by Eugene Domingo, Ogie Alcasid, Gary Valenciano, Jaime Fabregas and Zsa Zsa Padilla. Also a must watch is The Company's Sweet Plantado who is a gifted comic judging from her stint at 9Works Theatrical's You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
I Do Bidoo is written and directed by Chris Martinez whose impressive resume includes the screenplay for critically acclaimed movies like Caregiver, Ang Babae sa Septic Tank, Kimmy Dora and 100. His works as a director include hits like Here Comes the Bride and Temptation Island.
