Mainstream actors win top acting awards in Cinemalaya 2012

One of the highlights of this year's Cinemalaya is the winning of Mumunting Lihim ensemble composed of Judy Ann Santos, Janice de Belen, Agot Isidro and Izza Calzado as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

We were lucky enough to catch the last day of screening of the said movie at Greenbelt 3. I think anyone that has done so will not question the decision as these actresses were definitely exceptional. Of course it helped that Jose Javier Reyes' screenplay was a riot. It was a brutally honest and moving.

Veteran Actor Eddie Garcia, on the other hand, bagged the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of an old gay man who shares the twilight of his life with his dog, Bwakaw. This poignant tale is another favorite in the festival, also winning the Audience Choice Award.

With the quality of films at the Cinemalaya getting better and better each year, I really hope that this would altogether replace the MMFF that features mostly senseless materials aimed to dumb down and cater to the studio's percepcion of what the masses would appreciate.

There is no question that the masses would appreciate another Enteng Kabisote film but at the end of the day, I think it is up to the entertainment industry to elevate this preference by actually releasing and showing them what good movies we have. And we do have great movies. If I hear anyone saying that they don't watch Filipino movies because Hollywood films are better, I would slap them with a copy of Ang Nawawala, Mumunting Lihim or Bwakaw while making them watch an endless rerun of Adam Sandler films.

Here are the chosen best among the films presented at Cinemalaya 2012.
