Review: ATM (Er Rak Error)
Here are some of the stills from the movie ATM (Er Rak Error) which premiered on June 3, 2012 at SM Megamall. This is said to be the top grossing film in Thailand for 2012, raking in over 152.5 Million Baht in Bangkok alone.
ATM tells the story of Sua (Chantavit Dhanasevi) who is dating his boss Jib (Preechaya Pongthananikom). They are forced to keep their relationship under the radar because of a bank rule that prohibits its employees to fall in love with each other.
The charade was all going on smoothly until the couple decides to get married. With neither of them willing to resign from their job, they agree to compete in solving a sudden ATM problem at the bank. Whoever winds keeps the job while the loser does the supreme sacrifice of letting go of the brilliant career that each has worked so hard to build.
When I got invited to the premiere screening of the Thail film ATM, I actually tried to get out of it. Having checked out the trailer prior to the event, I thought it would be slapstick-y at best and why watch a bad Thai comedy when we have that in abundance locally.
I was glad to have been proven wrong. Not five minutes into the movie, we knew that it was going to be a fun ride.
Was it slapstick-y? At times, it was. And yet they were able to pull it off. Did they highlight jokes with sound effects a la Wenn Deramas? Yes, they did. But they did that with perfect comedic timing and it didn't feel dumbed down.
The trick was pretty simple. They had a clear direction of where the film was going. They didn't just add scenes which they thought were going to be funny for the heck of it. Every scene had a satisfactory pay-off even if they seemed random and ridiculous at first.
And while this film may have a hard time finding a local audience, I think that this is a more enjoyable choice given what's currently showing in local cinemas, if only people would give it a chance.
ATM is showing at selected SM Cinemas starting June 6, 2012. It is locally released by Star Cinema.
