Gay men "must be put to death" - Manny Pacquiao (?)
If you think being called a "lie from the devil" is bad, bible-toting Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, in a recent interview with the National Conservative Examiner, quoted Leviticus 20:13: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." "It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old," he added. This is in contradiction to US President Obama's recent show of support for marriage equality.
Pacquiao, who is known to be a playboy and a gambler, has developed an obsession with the bible following reports that his wife filed for divorce on the eve of his fight against Juan Marquez on November last year. Source
I have always said that Pacquiao has gotten one too many hits on the head. Then again, people that are more educated have taken the same stance in support of the church and promote a seemingly hateful God.
As I have never been a fan of Pacquiao nor boxing, and I have never thought that he deserves a place in Philippine politics, this level of ignorance does not really disappoint me. It is not even surprising. I just hope that people can distinguish his being #4 in Forbes list of most influential athletes as a sports distinction and that his hateful stand against gay people and women will not rub off to the people who look up to him.
Manny Pacquiao Says Gay Men Should Be 'Put to Death'
The Bible Via-Manny Pacquiao: Gays Shouldn't Get Married, They Should Be "Put To Death"
Pacquiao makes anti-gay remark, barred from 'Extra'
Pacquiao has denied saying “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” Author owns up to quote. - Scribe owns up to Pacquiao’s ‘anti-gay remark’
These parts of the article were not contested:
Pacquiao continues: "God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other."
"It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old." Pacquiao believes same-sex marriage is an abomination and its advancement should be stopped starting from the high offices of the U.S. to block possible legalization.
Pacquiao's scheduled appearance on “Extra” was cancelled, according to LA Weekly. This is what they tweeted: "@TheGroveLA Boxer Manny Pacquiao is not welcome @TheGroveLA. @TheGroveLA is a gathering place for all Angelenos, not a place for intolerance." (- to this I say thank you.)
Rick Jacobs, the founder and chairman of equality movement Courage Campaign, told LA Weekly that Pacquiao’s comments will have an impact on his endorsements and sponsors in the United States.
“I do think that American sponsors are going to have to look very carefully about whether they can continue to pour money into his apparently empty soul,” Jacobs said.
Finally, whenever confronted by this issue on Marriage Equality, I always look back on these words by Kieth Olberman. Please watch.
"In a time of impermanence and fly-by-night relationships, these people over here want the same chance at permanence and happiness that is your option. They don't want to deny you yours. They don't want to take anything away from you. They want what you want -- a chance to be a little less alone in the world."
