On trending topics

Looking at the trending topics in Twitter tonight, TV5's Nandito Ako that features International star, David Archuleta secured the 4th and 6th slots. I was told that this has been happening for a few nights already and sometimes, the trending happens even before the actual program starts, supposedly signifying that people just can't stop talking about the show.

Considering how much of a big deal local media acknowledges twitter popularity, enough to always highlight it in showbiz oriented news programs, I can't help but wonder if this actually translates to anything tangible. Also, what if most of the tweets are retweets and obviously paid posts? Unlike ratings that is used as basis by advertisers, trending topics are used mainly as bragging tools and to make people think that these shows are popular even if in reality, nobody really cares enough to watch them.

Anyway, on this particular timeslot in the Philippines, here is the registered ratings from AGB-Nielsen on March 1, 2012. This is also the consistent trend among these programs over the last 3 weeks or so that Nandito Ako has been on air.

AGB Nielsen Mega Manila Household Ratings
March 1 (Thursday)

Walang Hanggan (ABS-CBN) 13.7%
My Beloved (GMA-7) 12.8%
Nandito Ako (TV5) 2.3%
