My Only Ü

Critics would agree that My Only U, despite its commercial success, is not a good film. It is littered with continuity flaws and some silly familiar jokes that should have been left to the Okay Ka Fairy Ko movies.

But looking at it from the point-of-view of someone that has lost a loved one, it is hard to resist the sincerity of the film. It is a heartbreaking comedy that is sure to pierce the heart and move the audience to tears.

My Only U tells the story of a girl who comes from a line that is destined to die at the age of 25 and her best friend who will do anything everything to prevent that from happening. It stars the appealing Toni Gonzaga and Vhong Navarro in his most notable (and award-worthy) role to date. It is directed by tagged Box-Office maker, Cathy Garcia-Molina who is a master at translating pop-culture romance into the big screen.

The strength of the film lies in the solid performances of the cast especially Navarro and the strong chemistry between the lead actors who can make the most absurd jokes amusing. The story is predictable enough but it is neither too obvious nor disappointing.

And while some people may protest that the ending where the characters are given their version of a happy ending, squandered the emotional depth developed throughout the entire film, I see it as the most fitting end to such a moving tale. Then again, you have to be able to look at it from the eyes of someone who has never wanted anything more in their life than to be with that one person who means more than life itself.
